Greek Foreign Minister Teodoros Pangallos said yesterday that his government is ready to legalize the hundreds of thousands of illegal Albanian workers employed in Greece by autumn.
“The adoption of this law by parliament has been postponed until autumn, since we are dealing with two separate issues: seasonal workers, who make up 2/3 of illegal Albanians in Greece, and those with permanent residence, who will enjoy a different status from the former,” Pangallos told journalists. But diplomatic sources say that before finally resolving this problem, Greece wants assurances that three schools for the Greek minority will open, as planned for next September.

On the eve of the elections, over 35% of voters have certificates
According to statistics from the Ministry of Justice, an estimated 700,000 voters will have their ballots stamped using certificates. This represents more than 35 percent of the 2 million and 100 thousand Albanians who have the right to vote. This phenomenon, rare for a serious state, has been around for some time. For more than 10 years, identity cards—the basic identification document—have no longer been distributed by civil registry offices.
