OSBE, much ado about nothing

Yesterday's announcement to the members of the OSBE office in Tirana that its short-term observers would number around 400 completely and understandably relieved Albanians from the anxiety about the role of this organization in these elections at least. In addition, the leaders of the opposition threatened to boycott the elections, and there was also the dilemma of whether the OSBE mission was looking at the country with a pragmatic, rather than humanitarian, foresight, which could not be said to amount to elections. The existence of the elections of 26 May, with a government-controlled organization, had greatly troubled the camp working on the elections already. According to a series of senior OSBE officials, in the office and in the mission camp of the election observers set up by the government, it is learned that the camp experts were supposed to recruit 200 observers at the same time. Naturally, the question raised was whether they would be serious foreign observers of renown, especially in the case of exposing dictatorships. The same organization was dealing with the role of this organization in these elections. Yesterday too, the independent democrats received the welcome news of the high number of observers (around 400 to assist in monitoring the elections). In the statement commented on by the government, this invitation to monitor the votes has taken on an oppositional turn. The PPD and the independent democrats have softened their tone by saying that the elections of 29 June cannot be called equal if the problems of the de-here are not resolved. It was also learned that the reactivation of the mission of the European center was being considered, and there too it immediately moved on to the other offices. After yesterday's statements by Ramiz Alia with the OSBE's demands that Albanians recognize the government in its current form. Most opposition politicians said yesterday that they would mobilize the forces, the media and their operators so that their “seal” as a symbol would be kept before and united by 400 observers. In a sense this development reflects the intoxication of the present and the fog and pressures. Albania is going back in an endless vicious circle. The problems are the same. Once again the government has in its hands the clear role of OSBE, perhaps even to save the opposition. However, even when it is one day from this and the mission comes one step further than we were dispersed. In yesterday's reaction by the Agrarian Democratic Party or the Christian Democratic Party, it is noted that Albanians should have faith in this mission. With the democratic Albanians it was said that this mission should not include the opposition or observing journalists, which caused the observers to remain and withdraw as they emerged. The official announcement yesterday says that some of the foreign observers will arrive in the north of the country, while some of them will also follow developments in the south. They will be distributed in districts such as Tropojë, Kukës, Vlorë and Tepelenë. A. A.
