Nano: We will convene Parliament ourselves

Politicians, get out of the mud!

BY FRROK ÇUPI Instead of becoming politicized, at least now, and looking like a single axis, things are in fact going round and round. This has happened because of the delay by the signatories of 29 June and because of the new President’s diabolical tactics. Now people, once again angered, watch Berisha’s image, which disappears from one circle and then another. This is also his aim: to cloak himself in amnesia while maintaining a state of psychological pressure on the people. Just look at what the last resort is: summoning the political parties to an audience. With this act, the new President once again seeks to present himself as Top Politics. The aim is even more dangerous: to open Parliament and the new government, and after that sit cross-legged once again in the Presidential office. As soon as he has ingratiated himself with several parties (including the losers), his intention is finally to ask them: “What do you say, should I remain president again, since now I’m a good man?” Just as on 9 March. From 29 June until now, Berisha has gone round and round in this way: 1) an attempt to squeeze everything out for another two months; 2) stirring things up in Tirana in the name of the Monarchy; 3) constitutional monopolization, according to which he is both president and deputy; 4) the developments in Gostivar, in the hope that a war might break out; 5) stirring up trouble against Nano in order to dominate through the government and split the victorious coalition, and finally—the gathering of the parties around himself. If Berisha continues this way with these tactics, he will once again bring Albania down and keep his heart’s desire. Then what would he need the victory of 29 June for? Victory must be put to use. So, what should be done? Once again we return to the idea that Parliament, the courts and the new government should receive their blessing in Vlora. Why should this be done? Not only as a ceremonial tribute (or for one’s biography, as some call it), which Vlora deserves. This act would now also have practical value: First, by holding Parliament’s first session in Flag Square, the chief whom Berisha destroyed will once again look to his own source. But not only that: Politicians who go to Vlora will finally escape Berisha’s curse. Meanwhile, the incoming Parliament and government will be spared the humiliation they might suffer at Berisha’s hands. Anyone who does not have enough feeling to go to Vlora does not deserve a parliamentary mandate. Many things can be foreseen in this way. Second, the meeting held in Vlora is a clean start for the government. Negotiations will be compromises with those who until now have ruined the country and killed Albania; the cause, and the future government as well, will have to keep many records to dispel suspicions. What determines the next steps and the protesting people is a guarantee of clean space in government. Government in Vlora is established only from Vlora, and then throughout the country. Third, by starting from Vlora, politics draws closer to its people’s interests than to diplomatic games. It is true that today diplomacy exerts pressure on many matters, all the more so because the new government in the country would not be recognized. But by turning once again to the people, any obstacle—even one from diplomacy—can be overcome immediately. The government must come from Vlora, not from the red palace in Brrakë, Tirana, where Berisha sits.
