BY GAVROSH LEVONJA Recently, the foreign factor has begun to form the idea of removing Berisha and Nano from the ranks of the leading figures in Albanian politics. But developments in the DP and the latest meeting in the SP showed that these two, at least for some time, however briefly, will continue, for better or worse, to remain the linchpins of Albanian politics. Considering the pressure being put on the socialist leader by the opposition to repeat June 1991, the friction with coalition partners, the contrasts with some of the party’s leading figures and, above all, the foreign factor’s tendency to describe him, together with Berisha, as one of the causes of the crisis, one might think it would be difficult, if not impossible, for him to withstand an attack from within his party. Predictions about Nano’s future in the party and government, based on developments in recent weeks, did not become reality after what was decided at the latest meeting of the Socialist Committee. Although his position was extremely shaky, the “number one” in the government and in the coalition’s largest party once again held on to his position. Thus, it can be said that Nano once again successfully weathered the challenge from his opponents within the party he leads.
