Resignation at the Presidency: “An effort to serve Albania”
Repeated resignation
BY BLENDI FEZIU
Nano will no longer be at the head of the government. The Prime Minister of all surprises will make this decision public between 10:00 and 11:00, during yet another surprise. This comes as a surprise not only to public opinion and many members of the governing coalition, but especially to his successor. The 30-year-old Fatos Nano has decided to leave his post in order to open the way for another generation of state leaders. At least that is how the latest message he sent to the parliamentary group of his party can be understood. If yesterday Fatos Nano convened this forum to confront it with a resignation, last night the senior representatives of the Socialist Party remained convinced that their leader was doing so under pressure. But about what? It is understood that the move toward the government did not involve only the prime minister, but for two days now a strong discussion has been underway between the two main figures of it. More precisely between the prime minister and the head of the Albanian government. Nano is said to have given the Presidency yesterday a solution to the crisis in the country’s governance, which is becoming serious hour by hour. At least one thing is clear. From now on Fatos Nano will be an alternative for governing, but not at its head. A few hours before he began the meeting with senior representatives of his party, Nano met with President Mejdani. In the office of the head of state, the prime minister decided to resign. Together with him he declared that he had been unable to resolve the knot that had formed around the new cabinet. It seems that the entire last-night discussion between the two senior state leaders took place as an effort to find a solution to the government crisis. But it could not have been such, because even by late last night nothing had been learned about the name of the successor. Al Nano has explained this possibility of changing not only the name of the prime minister, but much more. At least since noon, when the head of the Socialist parliamentary group, Skënder Gjinushi, arrived at the prime minister’s office, he entered a long meeting. Later, other senior leaders of the coalition gathered together as well. From this it was understood that yesterday morning the most important issue on the prime minister’s agenda was considered finding common ground with the allies. But, as it seems, they were not persuaded. At a final meeting of the Socialist parliamentary group, two names were found for the prime minister’s possible successor. Nano was not absent from this meeting. He left at noon, giving the impression that he was heading to the Presidency. The two possible names were the political secretary of the SP, Pandeli Majko, and the party’s deputy chairman, Namik Dokle. It seems that Pandeli Majko, one of the most prominent figures of the new generation in the SP, has a high chance of being at the head of the new cabinet. But Nano offered him the post of prime minister yesterday for the first time. It seems that this solution may be formalized today with the same act of resignation from yesterday. Nano may have already handed over the new successor’s name to the Presidency yesterday. At least one thing is certain. Regardless of his name, Nano has not been able to avoid such an act. This is due to the persistent opposition to him. The only person who supported the post and the government led by him to the end appears to have been only the President of the Republic. In the end he refused to leave.
