Unity is heading into chaos

BY ENTON ABILEKA Now they will have to wait. After the denials that brought them to light, the initiative by former Minister of Culture Edi Rama to move Tirana Municipality to another city and replace it with a decisive “group” no longer has the support of the PS or the government. The party chairman, Fatos Nano, rejected and cut it short, and in yesterday’s meeting with PS members, the Municipality was forced to retreat. This may be linked to the political crisis the majority is going through. Is it midweek or Saturday? At the moment when this question is becoming increasingly complicated, Unity is trying to take advantage of the situation. But the Municipality’s hopes have dimmed. The socialist chairman and deputy mayor of Tirana, S. Buxhuku, had gone yesterday to a meeting of the PS group with the idea that their matter would be smoothly overcome. However, that did not happen. Nano strongly opposed moving Tirana Municipality away from the center, calling it “unreasonable.” In a conversation he had, inside the hall, with Nano, Buxhuku complained that they had not taken the decision to discuss this issue in the Culture Commission, but that the draft decision was being used for political intrigue. But Nano, convinced that the relocation was no longer appropriate, did not accept the Municipality’s arguments. As had been rumoured throughout the week, Buxhuku and his collaborators had tried to gain ground with a new project. But the tension the PS was entering into, with the bloody reaction to the killing of Azem Hajdari, made the issues of administrative reorganization completely irrelevant. In the conversation with Nano, and also before the socialist parliamentary group, Buxhuku mentioned that the Municipality had decided to postpone the project temporarily. But the PS chairman’s response was cold: “On these days, such topics should not be opened.” Buxhuku realized there was no longer room for postponement. If last week there had been any hope of passing the decision through fast-track procedure and with the majority vote, that window now appears closed. Nano described the project as “hasty” and “useless”.
