Vlora, one year ago

BY BLENDI FEVZIU A full year has passed since the first protesters from Vlora filled their city square, shouting in extremis: “Bankruptcy for the guilty, Salih Berisha in prison!” It was that first protest which opened the democratic revolution of barricades and committees, setting the stage for a year of anger, resentment, hatred and usury. A time when time had definitively slipped out of control as an institution identified with the usury counter, when the legitimacy of power had not been accepted by the majority of half the country, and when most of this country had not yet forgotten the tricks of the 26 May elections. It was the time when slogans from much of half the country and over half of the protesters shouted only against dead communism with a single name of four letters. A full year has passed since the first protesters from Vlora gathered again in the centre of their city, shouting for the bankruptcy of the moneylenders and the death of Berisha. But in truth no, this was not the first protest. The series of the Albanian revolution began with little, thanks to the unquenched anger of the protesters, the student demonstration that failed in an attempt to sanitize the manipulated system and the total failure of the economy of the property of many families. Or perhaps with the failure of the popular companies that had been built about 5 or 50 years earlier and had not collapsed. Because in any case, a year has passed since the great Albanian explosion and Albanians now have in their eyes and in their hearts the words of that protest. It was meant to be democratic as never before. Over 4,000 killed. It has reached the brink of a miniature crisis of Albanian dignity. In Vlora, the accuser of these tragedies had been present for days, and with extraordinary zeal. As though from the distance of February the march moved into the centre of the Vlora insurgents in the political revolution. It was supposed to be democratic as never before and ever again. From there the protest escalated until the political revolt sank into a violent plane, further disregarding its mission and the accusations against the petty crooks. And the fundamental question raised one year later is: Was the fall of the Meksi government and the other officials of his government a victory or the loss of the crisis? On the contrary, should the issue have been pushed to the end, or stopped at a quicker victory, which would have brought a new government with neo-protagonists closer? On the other hand, after the social-political trauma caused by the fall of the government and the loss of control and power, thanks to the state of emergency of those days, the population of much of the south, and especially Vlora, filled the revolt with anger and everything that seemed to have to do with the state. The revolt had taken its own unstoppable course and had been reinforced by a sense of great injustice. Nevertheless, the question remains whether what happened afterwards was inevitable or not.
