BY FATOS LUBONJA A newspaper, as if in hand, finds a basket of honey flying above the temptations. The so-called scandals of government, published daily in "Koha Jonë", shed light on them and the most important figures of the majority are plainly seen by a world tired of the chatter. Mekomë. Without being published, they get tired of the chatter. Mekomë. Without being published, meanwhile, they ask whether they will go to prison. Or not. With this back-of-the-hand treatment, they have understood that the media are among the saviours. By circulating and spreading all public scandals, they are exposing themselves. Even worse, they have understood that for them to enter into the function of scandal more effectively. Yet the government has not understood how serious this mechanism is, how strong it is. This is because within the last few weeks, almost all important figures of the government have been involved in various kinds of trafficking. After the July-August crisis in the summer of 1997, it seemed that the new government promised another responsible course in its conduct, in relation to the law and the state. Many had taken it for granted that from the new majority a somewhat more rational and calmer government would be built, that it would move away from chaos and toward a more normal standard. But in fact, this last chance is burning away. Instead of building a government capable of establishing a more trustworthy administration and a more responsible attitude toward public money and the common interest, we are seeing the opposite. Now we are no longer talking about sporadic mistakes, but about an entire system of clientelist relations and corruption. It is enough to look in sequence at the cases that have become public: the oil affair, the tenders, the abuse of state posts, the contracts, the suspicious ties of ministers and other leaders. What makes the situation even more alarming is that no one takes political responsibility. Instead of resignations, we have justifications. Instead of serious investigations, we have the diversion of public opinion. This creates the idea that power is merely a means of personal gain. And when that idea takes hold, any trust of citizens in the state is destroyed. The current majority had a historic opportunity to show that the left can govern differently from the old model of plunder and arrogance. But, day by day, it is turning out that the promised change is being undone. If there is no will to put an end to this climate, then the country risks losing this opportunity as well. And when the last chance is lost, the price is paid for a long time.
