Typical American Determination
Diplomaticus
The ultimatum. Europe's from the Minister of and papiplaklet is becoming addressed to everyone by the officials and the countries of Europe and in the proposed place by the uncle of the USA. In this recent time, it is especially clear that this typifying is becoming a feature in all the NATO aggressive bombings over Yugoslavia. Because, for those who want to discuss and are doing analyses, it is clear that the Americans are asking as a kind of international worldview against Yugoslavia.
For Albanians this is more of a warning sign than an encouraging one, above all toward the government to take quick and decisive decisions. It is known that European countries, even when they speak in the language of military guarantees, often think about the next economic whim or about preserving various balances. Meanwhile, the Americans, at this stage, are carrying their message through to the end.
Thus, when the representatives of the G-8 countries had not yet even settled properly around the table, when Strobe Talbott had just arrived in Sarajevo and Madeleine Albright had still declared that Milošević could not remain in power, the Pentagon carried out most of its strikes against areas located in strategic corridors. It is no coincidence that important bridges, fuel depots, communication points and railway junctions were attacked with such intensity.
Yes, on the other hand, this concerns the implementation of NATO's latest declaration, which clearly stated that Belgrade must accept the conditions without any reservations from Moscow and with some political tolerance from European capitals. Was any deadline mentioned? No. Was any interruption mentioned? No. Only that humanitarian corridors may be set up and additional forces sent there.
If Yugoslavia does not comply, all means will continue to be used. This is being said almost openly by all officials in Washington, while the European capitals, with the exception of London, continue to seek softer formulations. This is precisely where the difference lies between typical American determination and cautious European diplomacy.
On our national level, Albanians must read this international climate correctly. There is no room for illusions. The Kosovo cause is being supported, but it also requires serious behavior and better state organization. Any confusion, any internal quarrel, would weaken our position even further.
Therefore this moment is a test for the Albanian political class: to understand that alliances are not decoration, but responsibility. And if the USA is showing this typical determination, it is also because it expects its partners not to play both sides.
The same applies to the region. Milošević's Serbia will find it increasingly difficult to survive politically if it continues to defy the world. But that does not mean victory comes by itself; it requires patience, sacrifice and uninterrupted coordination.
