An offensive by Greek politics and diplomacy in Kosovo

In the context of the increasing recent activity in the Balkans and of NITOS's active diplomacy, it is becoming apparent that Greek politics and diplomacy, through the KFOR missions in Kosovo, are also becoming increasingly active in Kosovo. In this case Greece seeks to strengthen the role it has shown also during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, an incident in which a part of the Greek diplomatic and political establishment opposed NATO's attacks; a clear message was presented on three Kosovo fronts. With this thesis Greece seeks to ensure that the role played by Jane Fonda and the support for Kosovo are not undermined, but through this move Greece is secretly establishing and aiming to occupy a position and an advantage in the question of the future of Albanian territories and Kosovo. Meanwhile, two days ago a first visit was made to Zëriit [?] by a Greek archbishop who celebrated a funeral mass and held a rally, followed until the next day by double? and a welcome and bridge between the high structure of the Greek Church and that of official Greece. In recent days visits by politicians and senior figures from Greece have intensified in Kosovo and are becoming very active, reflecting the aims of Greek politics and its diplomacy toward Kosovo. On the one hand, this concerns the strengthening of Greek economic interests and strategic influence, implying itself in lines on this fact and, in order to make it acceptable to public opinion, Greece will implement and confirm this strategy through contacts with Kosovo's infrastructure and the integrating aim of the people of Kosovo and KFOR itself. What is the reason for Greece to legitimize this multifaceted Greek strategy in the decision on Kosovo? Meanwhile, since yesterday it has been suggested that in diplomatic circles there is a feeling that the intensity of Milošević's regime is waning and losing its force over the consolidation and implementation of the new market in Kosovo; the president of this campaign has made it known that a powerful Greek campaign is being set in motion to implement and to penetrate, in the first place, the interests of the Albanians and the people. This strategic campaign has been accompanied by daily actions and political movements to make it present in the highest Albanian circles and among the Albanian people. The strategy of this Greek lobbying will seek to exploit and serve Pristina and the people of Kosovo also through a large package of investments in the country's infrastructure. In recent days, the Greek archbishop and high-ranking Greek military officers who have been sent to Kosovo through KFOR have maintained continuous contact with Albanian political and church leaders. The United States supports Tirana: but does not forget Beijing either

The situation created by the Majko government and the first one has also left marks on the power of the administration in the United States. Under this system, the first entries of Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano were not welcomed and the arrival of the government brought a major change in the development of the situation in relations. At this level, the change in relations with Tirana was understood as a necessary step in a context where clashes with the structures of Albanian government politics were not few. These signs appeared from the beginning. Meanwhile, the new administration in the United States treated Albania differently, refusing to join the group that benefited from expanded assistance. This refusal came because within the new American administration there was a very critical assessment of some of the government's actions in Albania. Although relations later began to soften, Washington remained cautious in its dealings with the Albanian government. On the other hand, the United States has not given up on relations with Beijing, while preserving its own diplomatic balances. (continued on page 7)
