ALBANIA WAS GRANTED MOST-FAVORED-NATION STATUS IN TRADE BY THE USA

WHAT PD HAS DONE IN ALBANIA WAS IMPOSSIBLE EDUARD SELAMI Chairman of the Democratic Party On 28-29 August in Washington (Texas) the Americans unveiled the memorial to their beloved President Johnson. Referring to the extraordinary interest of the American media in Albania, it is worth mentioning a saying of former President Johnson, that "everything he does is right." Albanians truly trust America and know their great friends well. Just as during the Kosovo war, so too in this difficult period, U.S. support has been unstinting for Albania. The highest American regard for the Albanian people was expressed through the decision of the American government to grant Albania the status of most-favored nation in trade. This decision, taken a few months ago, is now entering into force and will have significant consequences for the economic development of our country. It opens the way for the growth of trade exchanges, the attraction of investment, the creation of new ties, and an entirely different climate for the Albanian economy. At a time when our country is trying to emerge from the legacy of a bankrupt system, this act has many-sided importance. In the United States it was underlined that Albania has taken important steps toward democracy and a market economy. The reforms launched by the Democratic Party and its government, although under very difficult conditions, have created the basis for this positive assessment. This is a great encouragement for all those who believe that the country's future is linked to the Western world and its standards. In various meetings with political and economic representatives, it was stressed that Albania needs help, but not charity; partnership, opportunities, and guarantees that the reforms will bear fruit. Most-favored-nation status greatly facilitates this path, especially for Albanian exporters and for the new businesses that are emerging. For precisely this reason, this decision should be seen not only as a diplomatic achievement, but also as a political message to the region: Albania is entering a new stage, in which it is valued for what it does and for its strategic orientation. Today, as the institutions of freedom are being built, every sign of confidence from the West is of great importance. And this confidence must be justified with work, responsibility, and determination. [Note: parts of the text are faint and some middle lines are difficult to read.]

THE LONDON CONFERENCE COMPLETED ITS WORK

The Conference on Yugoslavia will be linked to the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Italian news agency ANSA reported that some of the foreign ministers who took part in the conference on the former Yugoslavia described as a highly important decision the creation of a steering committee for the conference, which will undertake coordinated political, economic and military steps to resolve the conflict. The committee will be led by former UN Secretary-General Cyrus Vance and by Lord David Owen as representative of the European Community. According to diplomatic sources, the conference decided that pressure should be exerted on the warring parties in Bosnia and Herzegovina to stop ethnic cleansing and to create the conditions for a political solution. It was requested that all republics that emerged from the former Yugoslavia respect sovereignty and existing borders. Also in focus were sanctions against Serbia and Montenegro, as well as other possible measures in the event of non-compliance with international decisions. Participants noted that the humanitarian tragedy requires immediate action and that Europe can no longer remain passive in the face of the escalation of the conflict.
