On the other hand, the Socialist Party has asked that the elections be fully monitored by the OSCE, presenting this as a necessary condition for its full participation in the process. Political sources said that the SP is aiming for a model similar to Bosnia’s, where the international presence in organizing and overseeing elections has been decisive. A day earlier, Pandeli Majko had spoken about the need for a broad role for foreign observers in Albania. According to him, only a serious international presence can increase public confidence in the upcoming elections. The meeting between Berisha and Fino comes at a politically tense moment, as the sides are exchanging proposals and objections over the rules of the electoral game. The left speaks its mind about the government

According to some sources from the Republican Party, the document through which the left-wing opposition would express its position on the new government cabinet came out yesterday from its headquarters. Among other things, the document states that “the governing center-right alliance has failed, to the country’s misfortune, and it has also borne responsibility for the situation created. The left-wing opposition, united for change, made it clear from the outset to the political forces that it could not govern with them. This is because, in the end, they are responsible for the current situation. The outgoing government led by Mr. Aleksandër Meksi was incapable of dealing with the situation. Meanwhile, the new government of national reconciliation has failed before it was even formed, since it claims it will govern with the old people who gave life to the failed government.” The left-wing opposition parties further state that “the reconciliation government has nothing to do with the forthcoming vote and with the elections that must be held in the country, but is the result of bargaining. It has not been backed by public opinion, as its composition clearly shows. This government has no vision for the country’s future or for the restoration of normality. It will work with people who have been discredited before the people and the institutions.” The document says the new government is “simply a recycling of old people, who at a certain moment became part of today’s crisis.” The left-wing opposition also expresses reservations about the cabinet’s composition, underlining that “the main government positions have remained in the hands of those forces that cannot represent national reconciliation.” In the end, it says the left will maintain its own political stance toward the new government and will continue to seek a political solution through free and fair elections.
