Prodi: Nano, you are a trafficker of people

Minister Sherifi threatens Italy with a wildcat strike and a sit-in at the church. Prodi suggests a camp in Albania for migrants. Arbnori's health is increasingly deteriorating Today is the ninth day of Pjetër Arbnori's hunger strike. A sharp phone call between the Italian and Albanian prime ministers Prodi: Nano, you are a trafficker of people Minister Sherifi threatens Italy with a wildcat strike and a sit-in at the church. Prodi suggests a camp in Albania for migrants. Arbnori's health condition is increasingly worsening Nano's position on the exchange of permanent envoys, who would head the diplomatic missions in Rome and Tirana, is being described as provocative and unacceptable by a wing of the Italian majority, and is giving developments a course that allows for all sorts of assumptions. This time there has been no talk of dismissing the Albanian ambassador to Italy, of a worsening of diplomatic relations between the two countries, or of harsh positions toward Fatos Nano's government, but rather of breaking diplomatic relations with Albania and a blockade by sea or land for migrants. Such a thing has been expressed in a scattered way in the Italian media, but not in a synchronized manner. However, it is serving to prepare Italian public opinion for a tougher stance by Rome toward Tirana. Yesterday, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Valter Veltroni and Interior Minister Xhorxho Napolitano were more explicit, calling on Albanian refugees who have not obtained asylum-seeker status to return to Albania. Veltroni hinted that as soon as the new government is formed after the return of order, parliamentary groups will be set up specifically for Albania. Napolitano declared that if Albanian refugees do not return to Albania, Italy does not rule out tough measures. Such a warning, addressed just a few hours after Berisha's statement that Albania cannot host those who have sought asylum, was made even clearer by Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi himself during a phone conversation yesterday with Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano. On the Albanian side, according to the government spokesman, views were exchanged on the situation in the country, and the date 17 September was also discussed, the deadline by which it is expected to be decided who the diplomatic representatives will be. According to the spokesman, the Albanian prime minister reiterated the importance of relations with Italy and the importance of the return of Albanians to Italy through special mechanisms. But while Prime Minister Nano's press office states that the conversation took place in a "spirit of understanding", the Italian media report completely different details. The ANSA agency reports that during the conversation Prodi accused Nano of "trafficking in people" and said that the Albanian government is unable to stop them from crossing the Otranto Channel. Meanwhile, the ADN-Kronos agency cites a statement by the Italian Minister for Immigration, Livia Turko, that it would be good to set up a camp for refugees in Albania, which would make it possible to bring an end to the tragedy of refugees across the Adriatic. European Christian Democrats and People's Party support Arbnori

The political secretary of the office of the European Christian Democratic group for Central and Eastern European affairs, Paolo de Castro, has declared that the situation in Albania is detrimental to the European Union's interest in peace and stability. "The situation is by no means good and Albania's future needs more attention. Stability is still far away and the Albanian government has a special responsibility for the crisis of the hunger strike and for the political situation in the country," says the assessment of the Albanian crisis made by the official of the European Christian Democratic parliamentary group. He stated that in Albania conditions must be created for a constructive debate on the country's future, and that this means both the return of the opposition to Parliament and respect for the rights of the opposition. The Albanian government, he stressed, has a special responsibility to seek reconciliation and to make progress toward stability. He pointed out that the parliamentary debates on Thursday in Brussels will reflect the support that European Christian Democrats will express for Pjetër Arbnori's protest and will call for an international investigation into the violence against the opposition in Albania. Paolo de Castro has made it known that in the discussions of the European center parliamentary groups, ways to find a positive solution to the existing political crisis in Albania will be discussed. He urged the parliamentary groups not to neglect the situation in Albania, since it remains, in his view, delicate and with the potential for dramatic consequences in the region.

Memis, purely political

No one from PD has been armed Ceka's accusations against Memis are purely political A part of the PD officials in Lezhë has indignantly denied the Socialist Party's accusations of allegedly arming them to attack the institutions of Lezhë. Regarding this case, in a press statement, representatives of this opposition branch said they are collecting facts about the manipulation of the truth by the government. They considered the PS accusations absurd that work was under way to destabilize the country through conflicts from the north. According to the Christian Democrats, in this district no weapons have been collected with the aim of attacking government institutions and the claims made by the government spokesman are fabrications to create an alibi for the psychological state of siege. According to them, in the district of Lezhë there may only have been weapons left over from the unrest, but no military organization by PD. A number of local representatives declared that the accusations are intended to prepare the ground for a political strike against the opposition and that such news is being used to create a climate of fear in public opinion. They further called on the media to carefully verify the information and not become part of the government's propaganda.

Pollo leaves again after yesterday's plenary session

It was time to deal with the issue and the work of the socialists' leader concerning crime and his ministers. The socialists' declaration to unite Arbnori was met with accusations of nationalism. In the plenary session the day before yesterday in this series, the voice of the opposition and the voice of the majority were reduced. Shortly before 17:00 on Monday, the parliamentary hall was occupied only by socialist deputies and 3 members of the Alliance. Since the chair of the session had already checked the presence, he began to follow the agenda. Discussions on the draft law on taxes began, but they were interrupted after the socialists started asking for a break. The deputies stated that such a break would give the opposition the opportunity to enter parliament, from which it has self-excluded. Later, the chairman of the Socialist parliamentary group, Pandeli Majko, also appeared in the hall. He asked the presidency to warn the Democratic Group for lack of order, while saying that the opposition is responsible for the right wing in parliament not responding to the call. According to him, the opposition is interested in making a political spectacle. This was opposed by the democratic deputies who entered the hall a little later. The opposition submitted a motion to hold a debate on Pjetër Arbnori's hunger strike, but the majority did not accept it. Then, seeing that the session would not move in the direction the opposition wanted, Genc Pollo again left the session. SIREZA

Operations bring Arbnori

The government's stance on the latest developments and the way the political crisis in the country is escalating have increased concern in public opinion and in diplomatic circles. Sources close to the opposition say that through administrative measures and various obstacles an attempt is being made to exert pressure on Pjetër Arbnori's protest. Meanwhile, relatives and supporters of his state that Arbnori's health condition has worsened and that urgent medical intervention may be needed. They accuse the authorities of a lack of responsibility and of trying to minimize the consequences of the hunger strike. According to publicly made statements, the opposition insists that the solution cannot come through force, but only through dialogue and the guarantee of political rights.
