Nano — the penalisation of Albania
New hopes for the country's development as a result of the 29 June elections have been sharply dashed in recent days. What has happened to Albania's prime minister on a work trip to several Western countries, where he asked for economic and political aid for his socialist government, has ultimately revealed an anti-Albanian aim. In Athens he declared that our country is on the verge of catastrophe and that the only solution is the re-establishment of a new socialist administration and the creation of conditions for the return of refugees. In Germany, he said that our country needs 400 million marks and that this amount had been promised by the German government. The press adviser to the German chancellor, Peter Hausmann, informed Rilindja Demokratike that a meeting with the German chancellor Helmut Kohl does not exist, neither in the chancellor's previous agenda nor in the current one. According to him, the Albanian prime minister Pandeli Majko[?] has given false statements in Athens and Tirana. Nano had set off for Bonn hoping that the chancellor would receive him, as well as the other ministers of his government. But yesterday it was made clear to him that in Bonn he would not be received by the chancellor, but would only speak with officials of a lower rank. This severe blow has come not only as a result of Albania's situation, but also because of Nano's political conduct. As a result, he has lost the confidence of Western politics. This visit by the prime minister has seriously damaged Albania's interests and lowered its credibility in the eyes of Western partners.

Today in Albania, those suffering under a corrupt, governing-incompetent, perverse regime with an anti-Western and anti-Albanian orientation, such as the Tirana government, have been reaffirmed in a politically decisive way with such a verdict. Sali Berisha stated at a reception organized by the German embassy on the occasion of German reunification that the Albanian people recognize the special role of Konrad Adenauer in promoting freedom and Western values in Europe and in the world. All doors of cooperation with Western democracies are being closed to Nano and his government. This became clear after the interruption of his tour and after the statements of German officials. Furthermore, the chairman of the PD also called on the socialist government to abandon repression against the opposition and to stop the revenge campaign against the former administration.

Berlin, at the same time, the Germans have publicly mocked and refuted the Albanian government. According to the chancellor’s spokesman, the claim that Germany will give 400 million marks to Albania has no real basis and is either a misunderstanding or a lie. This is a strong political blow to Nano and his government.

Today in Albania, those suffering under a corrupt, incompetent, perverse governing regime with an anti-Western and anti-Albanian orientation, such as the Tirana government, have been pushed back into power and their political blindness was trying to return to the Albanians
The leader of the Democratic Party, Dr. Sali Berisha, declared yesterday at the embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, on the occasion of the 7th anniversary of German Unification, that the Albanian people are grateful to the German nation for the selfless help it has given, and continues to give, to the Albanian nation in its hardest days. At the reception organized for this occasion, Berisha said that Albanians would be deeply grateful and respectful toward Germany and toward Konrad Adenauer, who will remain in Albania's history as one of the most respected figures. Describing the socialist government's propaganda against Germany as undeserved, Berisha said that this government is trying to smear and damage the image of one of the most powerful states in the European Union. In his speech Berisha said that the Tirana government is establishing new relations with some other countries while undermining Albania's traditional relations with the West. Berisha stressed that the socialist government is trying to create the impression of Albania's isolation from Western countries, which, according to him, would have serious consequences for the country.
The PD is determined to revive the revenge campaign
Berisha met with the French ambassador, Chrisman
The chairman of the Democratic Party, Dr. Sali Berisha, received in a meeting yesterday the ambassador of the Republic of France to our country, Chrismann. During the conversation, the latest developments in Kosovo were discussed, as well as the revenge campaign of the socialist government in the country. The chairman of the PD, Mr. Berisha, informed the ambassador about the deep concern of the democrats over the purge being carried out in the former administration, as well as the disregard for independent institutions. He said that this behaviour is creating an atmosphere of insecurity and is damaging democratic standards in Albania. Ambassador Chrismann listened carefully to Mr. Berisha's assessment.

VAT 12.5% gains a little more
Albania, 97, the highest in the last five years
Most consumer goods will rise especially from Monday as a result of the introduction of VAT. Merchants in Tirana and other cities began yesterday to change prices, while citizens are rushing to shop before the new tax comes into force. Observations in the capital's markets show that the increase will be between 10 and 20 percent, with a direct impact on household budgets. Merchants say that even without VAT, shortages in the market and the depreciation of the lek have put pressure on prices. The situation is expected to worsen further in the coming days.
