But after 8 years of Albanian pluralism, Albanians still feel just as insecure as before the fall of the old totalitarian system. After 8 years, Albanians continue to be threatened by power, crime, poverty and injustice. The Socialist government, born out of the manipulated elections of June 1997, established a new system in Albania, similar to the one overthrown by the December students. In the last four months after the assassination of Deputy Azem Hajdari, Albania has been engulfed in a wave of political repression, with arrests, violence and violations of the rights of the opposition and the free press. Instead of the rule of law, the country is being run by political police and armed groups. The current government is trying to extinguish the spirit of December with violence, but civic and student resistance is rising again. The memory of 8 December remains a call for freedom, democracy and the overthrow of the communist comeback.
