We also believe that the opportunities for such development exist. However, regarding President Meidani’s recent visit to Beijing and the negative effects this visit may have on the Albanian state’s foreign policy, we have principled disagreements. 1. We disagree with the choice made by our head of state. As we learned from the press, Meidani was expected to make a tour of Asia, visiting Beijing and Tokyo. The Chinese side made the removal of Tokyo from the itinerary a condition, and Meidani accepted it, thereby showing the priority he gives to relations with China. We believe that setting such a priority runs counter to Albania’s political and economic interests. Japan is a deeply democratic state; consequently, our country’s political interests merit the closest possible rapprochement with it on page 2
