The socialist parties of Germany, Spain, France and Italy, in the last elections of this century, suffered a severe defeat. The Socialist Party of Germany lost four-fifths, while the government of Mitterrand and the French Socialists won a second term through the tactic of dispersing the opposition. The Socialist Party of Spain lost power, while the Italian left is left without its allies.
