Editorial BY ARBEN RROZHANI A few weeks ago the analysts at the “Economics Intelligence Unit”, the independent agency of the “The Economist” group, asked whether the so-called Arab Spring would yield further results, inspiring movements beyond politics in other regions, such as Europe, shaken by economic problems but also by the erosion of democratization in recent years in many of the former communist countries. The agency, which since 2006 has examined the state of democracy in the world, has focused on five main categories: electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, government functioning, participation and political culture. Why did we go so low? We deserved it. Even this year we are leaving behind, we are doing another pair of ugly elections. And one sees that from 2008 to today many Eastern European countries are much less democratic than before and are moving closer to Russia. Albania was not among the very worst, that is, among authoritarian regimes, but it was ranked 87th, yet it was behind Malawi, the African agricultural country, being far below neighboring countries. Why did we go so low? We deserved it. Even this year we are leaving behind, we are holding yet another ugly election, with a flagrant distortion of the voters’ will, with an electoral body that violently violated the Electoral Code, with a government that, election after election, manages to restore victory at the table, turning the loser into the winner and the winner into the loser.
