Commentary BY PREÇ ZOGAJ The President, a simple story The chairman of the PS, Edi Rama, made it his own. In fact, he went further than expected. He went to Ilir Meta’s villa, incurred a political cost, but there is no bread without crumbs, as the people say; he waited, hoped he was drawing Berisha’s ally into the boat of the consensus president, then became dazzled by the mirages of the moment as if he could, with the help of the same compatriot, also take over the government. Where the waves are many, the small sack is taken, says the people. They also say: You can’t make bread with borrowed flour. Even worse when this flour comes from Ilir Meta’s sack. The dice for the President were cast, and Sali Berisha also did his part by putting forward a candidate from the direct right. By coming out with the name of Xhezair Zaganjori, he made part of the months-long discourse about the president obsolete. The political candidates were neutralized, Ilir Meta was taken on with respect. By keeping his word, or half of his word, Berisha made it harder for him to play both sides—left and right. For the sake of the illusions he sowed in the Socialist camp, Ilir Meta is trying to remain in the middle, but logically, after having achieved what he wanted—the avoidance of a strong political candidate... ► continued on page 6
