In an interview with “Shqiptarja.com,” president-elect Bujar Nishani recounts the moments before he was voted into the country’s highest office, as well as the health problems he went through three years ago. He invited Doctor Mentor Petrela to make his medical record public.

Government won, the others lost
After a 45-day presidential campaign, the worst-case scenario became reality. A government minister became head of state, Berisha achieved the goal he had at a cost that was easy for him to bear but clear to Albanians. The executive power has been handed over to the judiciary to be permanently neutralized. The mixing of media and politics, which was one of the parts of the presidential spectacle, showed that there is no power independent of politics and above all of the Prime Minister. The worth of everything and the value of nothing, Oscar Wilde would say.
Now that Monday’s noise has faded, though only somewhat, after the thunder of the long hours, it is clear that the main state building, expensive though it may be, no longer has any value. When Ilir Meta declared that he would not vote for a Democratic Party candidate, showed Berisha that he could vote against him and met Edi Rama at his home, it seemed that things were not as bad as expected. There could have been hope for a President who would guarantee independent institutions. But on Monday it became clear that Meta’s statement was only a Jozefina...
