Comment BY ENTON ABILEKAJ Albania’s sole objective on the 100th anniversary of the declaration of Independence has remained to avoid the shame of the third refusal of Candidate Country Status for the European Union. The meeting of the EU-Albania Stabilisation and Association Committee on 11 and 12 July will be decisive for the country with 12 October. In two weeks there will be the confrontation between the delegation of the European Parliament for Albania (and the non-integrated countries of the region) and the delegation of the Assembly of Albania. On Tuesday this preliminary meeting had already warned of failure. It was said that, only two weeks earlier, Albania had met almost none of the criteria for obtaining the Status. There were 3 conditions: the election of a president as representative as possible, the fulfillment of the November agreement and the achievement of some tangible results in several areas such as the economy, the fight against corruption and reforms in justice. The first failed. Representatives of the EU and the US said it too: the election of the president was the missed opportunity. Fulfillment of the third condition may be reassessed later, during September, not only by the delegation led by Kukan, but also by the European Commission.
