Berisha’s last alibi BY ENTON ABILEKAJ Berisha’s last alibi The lifting of immunity for senior officials went to parliament yesterday to turn into a political game. The submission of draft constitutional amendments by the Prime Minister’s Office seemed more like a political act, meant to challenge the opposition while also showing support for the lifting of immunity. Otherwise, the draft would not have come out of Berisha’s office, nor would it have been defended by his chief of staff, but would instead have undergone a consensual process in the legal affairs committee, as a joint initiative. The opposition was once again confronted with a fait accompli by a majority that hopes for discord, for the same kind of political game as before, in order to justify Brussels’ skepticism toward Albania’s integration. The proposed draft amendments were opposed as soon as they crossed the door of the Prime Minister’s Office by MP Erjon Braçe, who sees unlimited freedom for prosecuting and arresting a deputy as a “coup threat.” This may not be Berisha’s intention, but the winds that carried the letter from the Prime Minister’s Office to the other side of the boulevard seem to come from faraway Russia.
