Commentary BY AFRIM KRASNIQI The wrong offer of populist politics The majority has applauded the prime minister’s threat to hold a popular referendum on the issue of immunity. Without going into details, without any study or prior test, without using constitutional and legal mechanisms, and without analyzing the political and financial cost of the initiative, the powers-that-be think that the best way to dominate the opposition is to reject institutional means and shift to populist acts, hidden behind the term referendum. The history of such adventures remains fragile in Albania. On November 6, 1994, power thought the same way and the result is known; the vote was turned into a political election and the majority lost. In 1997, another referendum parallel to parliamentary voting, in which the PD and PS were in a political coalition, led to the loss of the monarchy. In 1998, the majority’s initiative for the constitutional referendum won only thanks to the opposition’s boycott and the setting of the minimum threshold for referendum validity. Since then, political majorities of left and right have rejected every parliamentary initiative for a referendum.
