Comment BY PREÇ ZOGAJ Voters should know I remember the unforgettable answer of the Republican Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich, when he was asked why the Republicans were pursuing a course of action like the one they used against President Bill Clinton in the “Lewinsky” affair. “Because we can,” was the answer. It sounded cynical, like politics itself: the ruthless elimination and exclusion of the opponent. But in the end it was sincere, if not acceptable from a certain standpoint. The Republicans had the majority in Congress. So they had the numbers to go after the Democratic President with a packed lunch. There is always a logic of votes in the actions and political acts of politicians. The vote of citizens, combined with the law and the constitution, enables those elected to do this or that. This is the logic of democracy, of the system with many defects, but which has no better alternative, as Churchill used to say. The delicacy of politics, in the very school of democracy, has always been the search for a balance between the power that the vote gives and society’s needs for cohesion, unity, reconciliation, independent powers where the citizen feels himself regardless of ... ▶ continues on page 6
