Dismantling, a slogan or a project?

Commentary BY PREÇ ZOGAJ Dismantling, a slogan or a project? Since fate has kept me in opposition for most of these twenty-two years, I have often found myself facing a set of questions with a common denominator. Will justice ever be established? Will what is due go to its rightful owner? Will those who took wealth through corruption and abuse return it? Will the corrupt deals denounced by the opposition be dismantled? Will someone finally say stop to this long-standing jungle where order, insofar as it exists, is preserved mainly by custom and not by law? Will someone build a state without touching freedoms and develop freedoms without weakening the state? These are questions that contain civic concern; questions born from the knowledge and personal experience of many citizens, questions that do not stem from direct personal knowledge and experience, but are based on the opposition’s and the media’s denunciations of corruption; questions that can be answered with a populist “yes” by a populist politician, but are essentially difficult if we want to speak honestly and directly. I, who do not believe in solitary heroes nor in the miracle of political justice brought by a leader, have for ten or fifteen years lowered my head when I am asked such questions and thought long before saying anything. I have not wanted to hurt anyone with easy answers just to get through the queue. I have not wanted, in political fashion, to deceive or lie by playing with the public’s organic desire for justice or, even worse, with a character flaw attributed to Albanians, as if they take greater joy when they see their house going up in flames... continues on page 8
