BY PREÇ ZOGAJ This Western opposition For a long time, and especially in recent weeks, the leader of the PS, Edi Rama, and the opposition as a whole have done and are doing their part, indeed more than their part, to unblock, as far as the opposition can influence it, Albania’s obtaining candidate-country status in the EU. The vote on limiting immunity, although an issue burdened with much speculation, is the latest act in a series of preceding acts and numerous meetings of Albanian opposition figures across Europe to lobby for this aspiration. I would not bet my life on it — the office of enlargement commissioner Stefan Füle knows better — but from what I have followed of the long process of integration of former communist countries into Europe, it is hard to find an opposition like that of Albania that has been so provoked, even wounded, by the government and at the same time so interested in the country’s integration into Europe. Although this may have cost it, and continues to cost it, a series of shifts among part of its electorate or part of public opinion, as if it were filling the government’s cylinders with oxygen.
