Commentary Comment BY AFRIM KRASNIQI Peace with oneself, not with Kadare On 8 October 2012 the Swedish Academy will award the Nobel Prize in Medicine, on 12 October it will award the Nobel Peace Prize, and within the following week the winner of the prize in literature will be announced. Each date is a major global event in its respective field. The eyes of all interested citizens around the world turn to the sealed envelope bearing the winner’s name, a name that then enters history. For states, nations and peoples measured by regular prize winners, one more crown is one more confirmation of a cultural and scientific supremacy. For small countries, nations and peoples, the winning act surpasses any other celebration and becomes a focus as a historical achievement, symbol and national asset. Albanians have a fragile and dramatic relationship with the Nobel Prize. The first and so far only winner of the Nobel Peace Prize is Mother Teresa (1979), an Albanian born in Skopje. The awarding of the prize was a festive moment for all admirers of peace and freedom, but not for the state and country to which she belongs.
