Commentary BY PREÇ ZOGAJ The honored ones A list of the nation’s honored people resembles a literary anthology. Everyone has in mind several names that someone else might not. That is why anthologies are judged better not by the names included but by the names left out. For example, if someone privately decides to compile an anthology of Albanian poetry and leaves out Migjeni, that anthology is flawed even though the author of the anthology may defend it with the well-known maxims “taste is not discussed,” “taste is subjective,” and so on. There are always writers and artists whose greatness is objective, certified by qualified criticism over time. They stand beyond subjectivism of any kind. An individual is not necessarily obliged to respect this principle in his own choice, by writing according to his own preferences. But an official institution is obliged to respect it. In response to anthologies, the lists of the nation’s honored people, such as those that have flourished on the 100th anniversary of Independence, are also judged by the names that are missing.
