Commentary BY AFRIM KRASNIQI Pyramids and the pharaohs of politics The German chancellor was voted on yesterday for the seventh time in 12 years as chairwoman of the CDU. In Italy, the left held two rounds of internal elections to choose Bersani as its candidate for prime minister. In France and Britain, the leaders of the main parties are regularly voted on, even in direct head-to-head contests, as in the race between the two Labour Miliband brothers. The practice of competitive and periodic voting is a basic principle of functional democracy in political parties, in society and in political power. This principle is also a requirement of legislation on political parties. In this context, Americans are known for the limit of two presidential terms despite their success and with no return to politics. Such practices are applied by all Western democracies, as well as by the majority of parties in former communist countries. None of the leading figures of the transition (Valesa, Havel, Kuçan, Mesiç, Gligorov, Izetbegoviç, Iliesku, Zhelev, Rugova, etc.) is still in politics.
