Commentary BY AFRIM KRASNIQI Humanitarians with state money It has become a tradition that at the end of the year the highest-ranking political officials organize charity ceremonies for orphaned children, for other categories of children in need, for retirement homes, for poor families, for the local electorate and for administrative staff. This year too we saw the prime minister receiving Roma children and handing out gifts, the speaker of parliament filling the hall with staff members’ children and handing out gifts, ministers and MPs distributing gifts in electoral areas or subordinate institutions, etc. Of course, such ceremonies will continue throughout the coming days, until December 31, when the ‘humanitarian week’ ends and the election year begins. In all these activities, the same script is followed: festive decorations are arranged, the politician steps smiling into the middle of the children, laughs and sings with them, takes some photos and distributes gifts like Santa Claus, - always under the watchful eye... ► continues on page 30
