Comment BY AODI NURELLARI Learning from misfortune The severe economic situation in Albania has led to a much greater rise in statist rhetoric, placing the entire responsibility for personal economic problems on the government. There is no doubt that governance and government policies themselves have a fundamental impact on the economy, but it should be borne in mind that the size of the private sector in the Albanian economy is increasingly larger, while the public sector is shrinking and part of what remains increasingly uses competitive management practices. This implies that a good part of the responsibility for the economic situation must be sought in the choices made by entrepreneurs, wrong investments, lack of strategies, disregard for research, failure to study and analyze the market, and failure to take into account the various trends of the Albanian economy, etc. So in a certain sense the Albanian economic crisis has a three-dimensional impact, the impact of the global crisis which is beyond our control and... continues on page 22
