Commentary BY AdRI NURELLARI National unification and the referendum The proposal for a referendum on national unification, without first preparing the ground and improving our position in the international climate, is a move that feeds a great illusion which, if it were truly carried out, would cause deep disappointment. This proposal gives the impression that the realization of national aspirations can be achieved with a magic flick, with a single nerve-jolting move or simply with a formal act that has very little to do with the current reality. The preparation of this proposal also shows a lack of knowledge of the history of efforts for freedom and equality of the Albanian nation in the former Yugoslavia. Specifically, on 2 July 1990, the then delegates of the Assembly of Kosovo publicly approved the Constitutional Declaration, by which Kosovo was declared a separate unit within the then Yugoslav federation, and on 7 September of that same year, the Constitution of the Republic was approved in Kaçanik. Meanwhile, on 29-31 September 1990, the all-people referendum was held with massive participation, which officially declared Kosovo independent and sovereign but as we all know, unfortunately, as a result of the situation on the ground and the international conjuncture, the will of the people was not materialized and remained... ► continues on page 22
