Commentary BY PREÇ ZOGAJ With destination fantasy The anti-corruption fight from political podiums has now gone up in smoke. The signs were given as soon as Prime Minister Berisha, upon returning to power in 2005, set aside the sweeping accusations he had voiced all across the country as opposition leader against several senior officials of the Socialist government. What happened? Where did all that promise go, which for months had served as the soundtrack of the era? History is not so simple that it can be told in two words. In telegraphic form, we can mention a few explanations. First, what always happens to the victors happened: they soften, feel rewarded, and therefore no longer have their former fighting spirit, and that is only natural, to be sure. Second, part of the Albanians who were seen in the Democratic Party as the cake of the new power was being cut rushed to claim the fruits of victory, which they considered their own from Berisha, thus marking with their appetite for wealth and their ties to dirty business yet another deviation of anti-corruption from its declared objective.
