Commentary Comment BY PREÇ ZOGAJ How Albanophobia can be defeated The head of the Albanian government, precisely he and perhaps some intellectual, journalist or politician of some small party, spoke at a security conference in Munich, Germany, about “albanophobia,” considering it a serious threat to the stability of the Balkans. “Albanophobia, in all attitudes toward Albanians, is alive and at work and it seriously threatens stability in the region,” the prime minister is quoted as saying in his speech delivered during a session attended by senior statesmen and well-known politicians from countries neighboring Albania, such as the President of Macedonia, the President of Croatia, the Prime Minister of Montenegro, and others. Presenting “albanophobia” as a regional danger is a new idea on the political agenda of the head of the Albanian government, just as it is unusual, not to say unheard of, in free countries to hear statesmen speak in this way about the fear and negative feelings of others toward their compatriots. The phrase “albanophobic, seriously stability in the region” is strong, suitable at best for a press conference with sharp questions, which does not seem to have been the case for... ▼ continues on page 20
