Commentary BY AFRIM KRASNIQI The immoral offer of power The largest party in government, the PD, has expressed its intention to secure a third term, by every means and at any cost, without any moral or ethical hesitation. In 2009 it chose the LSI as its main partner to form and remain in government; in 2011 it chose the Communist Party as an ally to win the Tirana Municipality; and now, as eight years in power are slipping away and the balance is negative, it is looking for new (a)moral schemes to stay in power. Over the last two days, three PD MPs, one of whom is a leading figure on its top team, supported in the media the idea of a broader post-election coalition between the Democratic Party and the Socialist Party. The alibi remains the same as in 2009: in the name of the interests of citizens and the country. In Albania, we have become used to co-government between the PD and the PS several times during the transition. In 1991 the two sides created a joint government; in 1992 the technical government was the result of a shared arrangement; in 1997 the two sides once again brought the broad coalition to life; in 1998 the West and Kosovo imposed several months of peace; in 2002 the two sides had 6-7 months of honeymoon in co-government; in 2008 the two sides changed the constitution and the political system together. They have been together whenever day-to-day political interests are involved, during the drafting and approval of the Electoral Codes, during the allocation of seats in the KKRT or in the Bank of... ... continues on page 20
