Commentary BY AFRIM KRASNIQI Urban elite vs. power elites A group of intellectuals took the initiative to sign a critical appeal addressed to the state institutions of Kosovo and Albania regarding the direct involvement of the Kosovo government in the process of signing the history during the period of the Ottoman occupation. Personally, I was and remain a direct supporter of this initiative and group, and the fact that in the last 48 hours the initiative was joined by several hundred other public figures is evidence of its success and fairness. The list is honored by the name of Ismail Kadare, a well-known Albanian figure in literature and a model of an intellectual with public, political and social commitments. The drafted document has a clear focus on problems, facts and solutions. It calls for the cancellation of the state political commission for revising history during the Ottoman period, arguing historically that occupation is coexistence, makes a dramatic assessment of the negative legacy of this occupation, and offers successful references for dealing with similar issues in other countries. It calls for a clear distancing from the abusive practice of appointing a Turkish ministerial counterpart to rewrite Albanian history.
