The fifth republic BY AGIM ZEKA The fifth republic When after the Second World War, the Albanian communists came to power, after a sham (euphemistically democratic) election, in December 1945, they proclaimed the People’s Republic of Albania (the first republic), in whose name and in the name of the people, they began the massacre of opponent intellectuals, idealists and democrats, even MPs. In 1976, after the approval of the demagogic Constitution of the dictatorship of the proletariat, came the second republic, christened the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania, and the country was pushed into an unparalleled communist regime; it was trumpeted as a developed socialist country, where power belonged to the working class, in alliance with the working peasantry, and such like tales. After the fall of communism in the countries of the former Eastern Europe came the democratic “revolutions”, the last and most distinctive of which was that of Albania, carried out by Ramiz Alia according to the instructions of the infamous Katovica and described as the “Negotiated revolution at the small table”; at the end of 1990 and after the first pluralist elections of 31 March 1991, in our country was born the third republic, without a surname, simply the Republic of Albania... continued on page 17
