Comment by AFRIM KRASNIQI The language of power “Bad language brings bad news,” the Romans used to say. A meaningful expression, which with slight differences in wording is found among most peoples and different cultures. Other expressions that link language to the mirror of the soul and thought, that see it as a reflection of a country’s cultural level, or that attribute to it great power even to the breaking of “bones” are also found in Albanian customary and cultural tradition. In any case, the symbolism is the same. A civil, careful, measured and correct language expresses the highest level of citizenship, democracy, and the values of a society. The more wounded it is, the more brutal, denigrating, labeling and mudslinging it becomes, the more shortcomings in political culture and in the level of democracy come to light. Such comparisons seem to be still new notions for Albanian social development models, where the thirst for freedom, the removal of censorship and the popular tradition of wall newspapers have torn down every wall of moral, legal and customary rules. It is enough to analyze the daily comments on the many social networks to become convinced that most people talk through technology and write as positive users of it, creating the image of a world without rules and in anarchy. Individuals who have only minimal knowledge of how to use the internet and technology, and who (mis)use them to lie in wait... ▸ continues on page 12
