Commentary Comment by KRISTAQ PRIFTI* Railway renewal In the European Commission’s Progress Report on Albania for 2012, the wording in Brussels, on 10 October 2012, stated: “Improve the rail transport sector as part of a package... The funds allocated for the maintenance of railway infrastructure are insufficient, with the risk of further deterioration of the network. The maintenance of railway infrastructure is a concern and needs more resources.” But neither the Ministry of Public Works and Transport nor the Executive Directorate General of Albanian Railways SHA has reacted, and they consider it normal for this transport sector to be allowed to deteriorate, up to complete liquidation. The people currently running rail transport are militants, incapable, they have simply come to collect salaries or to extort something from the few tenders. Meanwhile, the need to renew Albanian railways is being strongly emphasized; otherwise it is pointless to talk about European integration without the railway arteries from north to south and from west to east. The myopia and greed of the current railway and ministry leaders have also caused the failure of the prospects of the Pan-European Corridor VIII. And let us not forget that the architects of this Corridor are the United States of America, as far back as 1994, when the president was the great friend of the Albanians, Bill Clinton. The Washington administration financed aid by investing in railways, to show the leaders in Tirana, Skopje and Sofia that Europe can only be entered through the railways of Corridor VIII.
