Editorial PAGE Is the Democratic Party at risk of splitting? Unlike the Socialist Party, which split on its own when it was in power, with the formation of the LSI by Ilir Meta, the “characteristic” of the Democratic Party is that it splits both in power and in opposition. Deputy Chairman Ceka, who took a share of PD power, formed PAD, the Democratic Alliance Party, together with several MPs; this was the first major split from Berisha (Ceka today continues to be Berisha’s adviser, but PAD no longer exists). In opposition, it was Genc Pollo together with several MPs who formed PDr in 1999-2000, the Reformed Democratic Party, after he failed to run for party chairman against Berisha (Pollo today is a minister under Berisha and PDr no longer exists). These are the two major splits of the PD, excluding here the occasional departures and arrivals of individual figures, as well as Bamir Topi, who did not manage to leave a mark with his FRD in these elections. The question that arises, after Berisha’s insistence on the election of Lulzim Basha to head the PD, is simple: does this party risk another split? Normally the small accompanying question is whether there are Berisha opponents inside this party. Perhaps 20 percent of the membership, according to official data, came out against Berisha (Basha). But nevertheless Sokol Olldashi himself does not seem able to undertake... ▶ continues on page 11
