Comment BY OLTION SPIRO Berisha’s 100 days During these 100 days we saw, with hysterical precision, the entirety of Sali Berisha’s style of governing. As if texts were written and he had ruled as a hegemon, as he would have wanted, we could not have had a better outcome in terms of his worldview of power. However, so as not to misread this personal and all-encompassing observation, we must say without prior hesitation that he was not (is not?) an isolated phenomenon. He is the most accomplished expression of Albanian and Balkan social development, somewhere between the desire for quick success, sudden enrichment, and the pleasure of unquestioned honor from anyone, all of this in a climate of physical and verbal insecurity. Somewhere this social stratum, which wanted to become bourgeois but had its brains ossified, had to express itself and, damn it, it expressed itself best in Albania. These 100 days of miniature government showed the incalculable damage that a government can do to its own country. In fact, there is a strange paradox, because it would not have caused such great damage over a normal term in office. Not that the desire was lacking, but certain constitutional, legal, ethical, and moral mechanisms, and other strange phenomena, did not allow him to abuse his office as much as he would have liked.
