BY JOHN CASSIDY The rebellious economics students are right If you missed it — and chances are that you did — a revolt is taking place at universities. It is not exactly Paris 1968, but there is a significant movement — though still a small one — stretching from New York to London, Rome and Tel Aviv, determined to change the way economics is taught. Echoing calls that have been growing in the economics world for more than twenty years, and that became even stronger after the 2008 financial crisis, the student rebellion is demanding a more pluralistic and different approach, rejecting the textbook methodology, which often reduces economics to a series of mathematical exercises. “The real world must be brought back into the classroom, as must debate, with a plurality of theories and methods,” said a group that has become... continues on page 15
