In 1988, four employees of the Bank of England conspired with one another to steal 600,000 pounds sterling (around one million dollars) from the used banknotes being burned at the Llofton Incineration Plant, a facility of this bank. The employees were arrested and convicted. 26 years later, for four years in a row, an employee of the Treasury of the Bank of Albania steals 7 million dollars in banknotes of lek, in brand-new money and in used money, intended for destruction. The image of the security of the country’s central bank is considered damaged and public opinion feels shaken and outraged.
