Commentary BY AFRIM KRASNIQI The game with the statues has no winner In the first days of 1944 the new regime blew up at the memorial grave of Ahmet Zogu’s mother, former prime minister, former President and former King of Albania. The same regime moved from the center of Tirana the symbol of independence erected during the monarchy. A few years later the regime also erased the grand City Hall building in order to erect on its ruins a museum of socialist realism. The ritual of punishment against historic buildings and particular symbols was repeated, especially against religious institutions. An extraordinary video has been circulating these days to prove the blowing up of the Church of Vau Dejës, among the oldest, and today, perhaps one of the rare works of independence we have in our hands. ► continues on page 18
