REPUBLIC OF ALBANIA MINISTRY OF THE INTERIOR Tirana, 09.10.2013 Press release A network trafficking in the illegal trade of works of art to the detriment of cultural heritage is struck; through it, during 08.10.2013, structures of the ‘Illegal Treatment’ Commissariat within the General Directorate of the State Police, in cooperation with the Prosecutor’s Office, made possible the identification and arrest in flagrante of the citizen with initials G. TH., suspected as organizer and perpetrator of trafficking in works of art consisting of icons and paintings stolen in several towns in Albania and in Macedonia. In addition, the following citizens were arrested in flagrante: 1. Arben Rehmani Spaha, 40 years old, born and residing in Fqordane and residing in Kamza, Tirana, previously convicted for theft, 2. Gjergji Thimios, 43 years old, residing in Kërçë and residing in Tirana, previously convicted for theft and forgery of official documents. From the searches carried out in their homes and premises owned by these citizens, the following were seized as material evidence: 223 church icons painted on wooden surfaces, of which it is suspected that they were stolen in Macedonia, 6 other icons suspected to have been stolen in Albania and Macedonia through the trafficking of works of art, 6 metal works suspected to have been stolen from churches in Voskopojë and the surrounding area, 4 mural paintings, preserved, suspected to have been stolen from the churches of Voskopojë and the surrounding area, 522 bronze paintings, which belong to the medieval period, 322 other clay objects belonging to the medieval period. These citizens are suspected of having acted through this grouping with involvement in Macedonia and Albania, works of art in cult objects, and that they were brought as a destination for sale through networks. The materials will be forwarded to the Tirana Judicial District Prosecutor’s Office for the criminal offenses of ‘Trafficking in works of art and culture’ and ‘Theft’ of works under articles 138/a and 25 and 138 and 25 of the Criminal Code.
