Editorial By Carlo Bollino Like the chemical weapons case, Rama should tell international partners NO again For the second time in less than three years of government, Edi Rama once again finds himself facing a fatal choice in his relationship with the U.S. and the European Union. When, in November 2013, the Prime Minister received the American request to bring into the country several tons of chemical weapons coming from Syria, Rama had to think long and hard before deciding. After having given a “yes in principle” to the American allies, he discovered that the entire Albanian public opinion (and even some of his allies) was against this choice: and so, caught between the need to keep his word to his international allies and the need not to betray the expectations of his people who had just elected him, Edi Rama chose the Albanians. And he said “no” to the United States. Everyone expected him to pay a much higher price for this decision, but in reality - as often happens in realpolitik - nothing happened.
