Almost three years ago Italy taught the world the word “tangente” by introducing the phenomenon of “tangentopoli”.
A group of judges from Milan led by Antonio Di Pietro shook the country by investigating the political class. Millions of dollars in bribes paid by merchants and industrialists to politicians or their parties, considered illegal funding, in exchange for a favor to win a contract or obtain a loan. An entire political class was leaving power, and even politics, to face the “black robes” of justice. Some ended up in prison, others had their property seized. Although millions of dollars were returned to the state budget, what was called a victory was the cleansing of politics from “black money”.
