New visions, change and a definitive break with the past
The second Congress of the Socialist Party of Albania concluded
Congress of reform
Fatos Nano is re-elected Chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania
The second session of the Congress of the Socialist Party of Albania was officially opened yesterday with the Hymn to the Flag and the performance of the Internationale. It was greeted and opened by the acting chairman of the National Assembly of the Socialist Party, Servet Pëllumbi, who stressed that despite the debate on democratizing the party, in the highest interest of the PS itself and the national interest, the chairman of the Socialist Party must be Fatos Nano.
The opening speech and the one that set the tone for the congress debates was that of the dissident arbnorist Fatos Nano, who optimistically assessed the path taken so far by the socialists and at the same time defined the changes that must be made in the Socialist Party in order for it finally to become a modern and European left-wing party.
In addition to the delegates in the hall, the congress was attended by many invited guests, PS deputies, members of trade union and social organizations, as well as delegations from foreign parties who had come to greet the congress proceedings.
At the close, the congress elected the secretary of the presidium, the voting commission and the relevant commission, and also approved the program, the statute and the resolutions, for the joint local victory, for crime, for the role of women, for young people and students, as well as for the role of intellectuals and property. Finally, by vote, the members of the KPD were elected and the new KPD will meet on Wednesday to vote for the new presidium. At the end of the session, the second Congress of the Socialist Party was declared closed.

For several years in the core program of the PS, as has also been the case with the revisionists of several chronological spectrums, there has existed a vague term with the formulation “seizure of lost power” or, more precisely, “return to power at any cost.” This formula, as the world of truth has shown, has proved unclear, even harmful for the present and future of any responsible political force.
Such was the greatest concern in reforming the program and statute of the PS. If one carefully read the discussions and debates of the congress in the first session on Saturday, it was not difficult to understand that at their core stood precisely this idea together with the institutional framework that would guarantee it in the future.
The motion and part of the theses under discussion were focused on three main pillars: first, independence from the base from all forms of confrontation with political and institutional circumstances; second, the emancipation of the force and ideology into a program free from the vices of the past and of the left; third, the mental proof needed to separate a new concept of the leader from the old one.
In this sense, the decisions of the congress and the entire shaping of the new statute are a document of value not only for the Socialist Party but for every political force and for Albanian pluralism itself. They will go down as a special stage in its history, which also drew the attention of many foreign observers and of all the media present in the hall.
