The police response turns Berisha's statement into demagoguery
Statement of the Forum for Democracy The police response turns Berisha's statement into demagoguery The people's peaceful protests are a democratic means of expressing their demand for the solution of all the troubles and problems that truly weigh them down and have accumulated over years and years because of the vile and unworthy rule of Sali Berisha's clique. The Forum for Democracy condemns the use by the police of unacceptable state mechanisms of repression in the demonstrations of the Democratic Party and responds to the statements of President Berisha and his followers with this press release: "The head of state was in a serious state of agitation, as it is said, because of the bloodshed of the people after the unlawfulness of the Democratic Party's protests and organization. He can justify in no way this vandalism by the people's police against peaceful protesters, while trying to hide its victims. Nothing of the sort can stop popular support for the eruption of civic discontent and peaceful protest. The Forum for Democracy strongly condemns the police for the barbaric use of violence with rubber batons, whips and other means against the citizens of Tirana. This has alarmed broad democratic opinion in the country and abroad. This serious event has further increased the indignation and contempt of the people toward the neo-communist regime and its ruling clique. The Forum for Democracy informs President Berisha that irresponsible police actions and the people's punishment do not in any way stop peaceful protest and opposition to the extreme nationalist forces of the head of state. We call on the country's agreement and on citizens to increase their participation in peaceful protests and their democracy. Tirana, 7 February 1997
