President of the Republic Rexhep Meidani, as part of the first consultations with the governing bodies and the highest leadership of the country, as well as with independent institutions, held yesterday afternoon a meeting with the leadership of the People’s Assembly, chaired by its president, Namik Dokle. In this meeting he also spoke with the chairmen and members of the three permanent parliamentary commissions, on economy, public order, and health.
The talks focused on the main directions and issues of the work that the new and current Assembly can do, such as creating the necessary legal framework, the proper functioning of democracy, mutual cooperation, and the country’s prospects. Special emphasis was placed on the problems of further close cooperation between the President of the Republic and the People’s Assembly in the effective normal functioning of democracy. There was particular discussion of the situation created in the country and of the tasks the new government must face in restoring order and calm, organizing free and fair elections, and preparing an effective functional climate for democracy. There was also discussion of strengthening the role of the deputy in the traditional relations of representation and by using the current bases of direct ties with the electorate. To improve the work of the People’s Assembly and its commissions, the need was underlined to improve the rules of procedure and achieve European standards of parliamentary work.
